ReplyDeleteDon't know if this helps or not, but there is also a line of narration done by Brad Pitt in the original trailer that never made it into the final film (a shame because I loved the line):
"Someday we'll fall down and weep... and we'll understand it all. All things."

The book is not quite out yet, but these may be worth adding to your catalog of missing scenes.
I quibble with the word "Purgatory," however. These do not appear to be souls or spirits, but corporeal bodies, nor are they in torment but rather awakened from a great sleep. It looks to me that this scene alludes more strongly to "the resurrection of the dead" in Christian eschatology than anything else, but I digress.
